Golf is often seen as a sport that takes years to master, but everyone has to start somewhere. At Short Game, we understand how intimidating it can be for beginners to get started, which is why we've designed our Adult Beginner Series. This 6-week course is tailored specifically to help new golfers learn the fundamentals of the game in a relaxed, supportive environment. Each week, we focus on different aspects of the game, from the basics to more advanced techniques, all while fostering confidence and enjoyment.

In this blog, we’ll take you through the details of each week, so you know what to expect as you embark on your golfing journey.

Week 1: Golf Basics and Putting

The first week of the series is all about laying a strong foundation. Golf might seem complicated at first, but with the right guidance, you'll quickly realize that it's a game of simple concepts executed with patience and practice.

- Introduction to Equipment and Rules: We’ll start by familiarizing you with the different types of golf clubs and their purposes. Understanding when and how to use each club is key to building confidence on the course.

- Basic Golf Terminology: You’ll learn essential terms and rules of the game, from how to keep score to golf etiquette.

- Putting Fundamentals: We dive into putting, which is often one of the trickiest but most important parts of the game. Our instructors will walk you through the basics of grip, alignment, and stance. You’ll practice putts of different lengths, getting a feel for how to control the ball on the green.

By the end of Week 1, you'll have a strong grasp of how to approach the putting green and an understanding of golf’s foundational rules and concepts.

Week 2: The Short Game (Chipping, Pitching, and Bunkers)

The second week shifts focus to the short game, which plays a crucial role in lowering scores and boosting confidence around the greens. This is where beginners often struggle, but our instructors break it down into manageable steps.

- Chipping: You’ll learn how to control those delicate, low shots that get your ball from just off the green onto the putting surface. We'll teach you how to judge distance and feel, as well as how to use the right clubs for chipping.

- Pitching: For shots a bit farther from the green, you’ll practice pitching. This requires more loft and precision. We'll show you the technique to hit higher shots that stop quickly on the green.

- Bunker Play: Many new golfers dread sand traps, but with the right technique, you’ll learn how to escape them confidently. You’ll practice hitting from the bunkers and understand the specific club adjustments needed to make successful sand shots.

After Week 2, you’ll be better equipped to handle short-game situations with finesse, saving strokes where it matters most.

Week 3: Full Swing – Irons

In Week 3, we transition to the full swing, starting with your irons. Learning to hit your irons well is essential because they are versatile clubs used in a variety of situations.

- Understanding Irons: You’ll learn the differences between the shorter and longer irons, understanding when to use each based on distance and course conditions.

- Full Swing Mechanics: Our instructors will teach you the fundamentals of the golf swing, focusing on grip, stance, and posture. You’ll practice with your irons, focusing on making solid contact with the ball and understanding how your swing affects distance and accuracy.

- Using Data for Feedback: Using our Trackman Range, you’ll receive instant feedback on your swing. This data helps you make real-time adjustments and understand how to improve.

By the end of Week 3, you'll start seeing significant progress in your full swing, with a better understanding of how to hit your irons confidently.

Week 4: Full Swing – Driver

In Week 4, we focus on one of the most exciting aspects of golf: the driver. Many beginners are eager to learn how to hit longer drives, and this session is designed to help you gain control and distance off the tee.

- Driver Setup and Technique: The driver is different from the irons, so you’ll learn the proper stance, ball position, and swing adjustments needed for longer shots.

- Swing Mechanics for Distance: We’ll show you how to generate speed and power without sacrificing accuracy. Our instructors will help you build a consistent, controlled swing, which is crucial for driving success.

- Trackman Data: Once again, we’ll use the Trackman to give you feedback on your swing speed, launch angle, and carry distance, helping you understand where to focus your practice to maximize distance and control.

By the end of Week 4, you’ll have more confidence hitting your driver and will be able to make more consistent, accurate tee shots.

Week 5: Class Votes

Week 5 is a unique feature of our Adult Beginner Series because it allows the class to decide the focus of the session. After four weeks of structured learning, you may have specific areas where you'd like more help or feel you need additional practice.

- Personalized Learning: The class can vote on whether to revisit specific topics such as short game, full swing, or putting, or focus on something entirely new like course strategy.

- Instructor Feedback: This session offers the flexibility to go deeper into any area where you feel less confident. Whether you want more bunker practice, need help with driving consistency, or want more on-course strategy, this week is designed to address those specific needs.

The goal of Week 5 is to ensure that everyone leaves the program feeling confident and prepared for the course.

Week 6: Scramble Tournament on the Trackman Range

The final week is a celebration of everything you’ve learned during the series. We organize a scramble tournament on our Trackman Range, which allows you to experience a fun and competitive round of golf in a team setting.

- Team Play: In a scramble format, you’ll play in teams, with each player contributing to the overall score. It’s a great way to test your skills in a supportive environment.

- Using Technology to Track Progress: The Trackman system provides real-time feedback on every shot, helping you measure your improvement from Week 1 to Week 6.

- Tournament Atmosphere: This session is not just about competition—it’s about having fun and enjoying the camaraderie with your classmates.

By the end of Week 6, you’ll not only have a strong grasp of the fundamentals of golf but also the confidence to continue improving on your own. The scramble tournament serves as both a fun way to wrap up the series and a chance to put everything you’ve learned into practice.

Conclusion

Short Game’s Adult Beginner Series is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to build confidence and skills in golf. Whether you’re picking up a club for the first time or brushing up on the basics, this 6-week program provides a supportive, hands-on learning environment. With expert instruction, cutting-edge technology, and a focus on making the game enjoyable, you’ll leave the series feeling ready to take on the course with confidence.
